Here are 15+ things you should think about before you take your next photos, let this guide you to stronger images.
Obvious subject or subjects
Surrounding elements give context without distracting
Uncluttered background
Rule of thirds composition
Or centered composition
Lines leading to subject if possible
Lines not leading to other elements
Appropriate depth for context
Level horizon or horizontal lines
Exposure to prevent blown-out highlights
No elements cutting through or behind subject accidentally
Try different angles and perspectives
Use light and shadows for framing if appropriate
Stabilize your camera if needed
Set appropriate shutter speed for subject
Set aperture for depth of field
Set focus where you want it
I hope to add to and refine this list into a sort of pocket guide you can take with you while out in the world. I think the goal is to make this all second nature and automatic if possible. It is often easy to forget to consider all the other elements that go into making one photo better than another one, and it might just be a matter of moving an inch or two or simply adjusting your aperture.
What else is really important to consider before pressing the shutter?
